How to Calculate Fabric GSM without GSM Cutter

Fabric GSM:
GSM means grams per square meter of a knit, woven or non woven fabric. It is widely used in case of knit fabric measurement. GSM plays an important role in garments manufacturing industry. Finding fabric GSM is a basic and common task for textile engineer or related responsible person in this sector. In two ways we can find fabric GSM. One is how to find out fabric GSM with using GSM Cutter and another is GSM calculation without using GSM Cutter. In this article, I will give clear concept on calculation of fabric GSM without using GSM cutter.
Measuring weight of sample fabric
Measuring weight of sample fabric
GSM is the weight of 1meter x 1meter fabric. It means 100cm x 100cm = 10,000 sq.cms.

Calculate GSM without using GSM Cutter:

For finding out the fabric GSM without using GSM Cutter , we have to follow the bellow steps:

  1. Cut a fabric sample of 10cmX10cm
  2. Measure the fabric weight in manual method
  3. Calculate the fabric sample area by multiplying length and width.
We can follow the below formula for getting GSM:

                         Sample weight x 10,000
Fabric GSM = …………………………………
                           Area of sample fabric

Note: For accuracy we can take few fabric sample from the different portion of fabric. Then calculate the average weight of fabric sample.

Let,

Sample weight (10cmX10cm) = 1.5 gm
Area of sample fabric = 100cm2

Now,

                         Sample weight x 10,000
Fabric GSM = …………………………………
                           Area of sample fabric

   1.5 x 10,000
…………………
        100

= 150

Fabric GSM 150 (ANS).
